Profound tiredness — different from ordinary tiredness — is common both during acute withdrawal and for a period afterward.
Why it happens: The combination of poor sleep, physical symptoms (aches, GI distress), and the underlying neurochemical rebound of withdrawal all contribute to exhaustion that doesn’t resolve with a single good night’s sleep.
What tends to help: Expecting this to take longer to resolve than acute physical symptoms; gentle activity when possible (complete rest isn’t necessarily better than light movement); addressing sleep disruption directly [link to insomnia article], since poor sleep and fatigue reinforce each other.
When this becomes a longer-term pattern: Fatigue can be part of PAWS [link], persisting for weeks after other symptoms resolve — this is a recognized pattern, not a sign that something separate is wrong, though ruling out other causes (thyroid issues, anemia, depression) with a doctor is reasonable if it doesn’t improve over time.
